    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • Right size loaf (fresher slices): One cozy loaf you can finish in 2-3 days. No stale leftovers or freezer Tetris! Just like this Chocolate Chunk Banana Bread.
    • Ultra moist, tender crumb. Pumpkin puree keeps quick breads soft for days. It does the same in my Pumpkin Blondies.
    • Chocolate in every bite. Chocolate chips cut through the pumpkin spice with melty pockets of richness. See also: Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies.
    • Kid approved and gift-able. Not too sweet, not overly spiced. Great for breakfast, lunchboxes, or a friendly doorstep drop-off. My Mini Apples Pies are the same way!
    • All the cozy vibes. Real pumpkin + pumpkin spice= classic fall flavor. See also: Pumpkin Spice Donuts.

Can I Make Just One Loaf?

Absolutely. Many pumpkin bread recipes are scaled for two pans (depth, oven efficiency, gifting), but a single 9x5 loaf is smarter when you want peak freshness and simpler storage.

    Pan choice at a glance

    • 9x5-inch: wider loaf, slightly shorter slices, bakes about 50-60 minutes.
    • 8.5x4.5-inch: taller slices, bakes about 60-65 minutes.

Pro Tip: For the tallest dome, bring all ingredients to room temperature so the batter comes together smoothly.

    Ingredients

all of the ingredients laid out and labeled on a grey background.

    Ingredient Notes

    • Pumpkin Puree. Use 100% pure pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling. See also my Pumpkin Cake.
    • I use semi-sweet chocolate chips, but you can use whatever type of chocolate you prefer. I use the same in my Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies.
    • Buttermilk and sour cream add flavor and moisture to the pumpkin bread. Buttermilk has the same effect on these Banana Chocolate Chunk Muffins.
    • Pumpkin Spice. Adds warm flavor to the batter and a hint of crunch when mixed with sugar for the topping. You can use homemade pumpkin spice or store-bought.

See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

    Substitutions and Variations

    • Chai vibe: Add cardamom and extra cinnamon. Get more cinnamon flavor from these Cinnamon Roll Cookies.
    • Chocolate chips: Use semi-sweet, milk, dark, or white chocolate. I love to use dark chocolate in these Chocolate Lava Cakes.
    • Chocolate chunks: Cut up a chocolate bar for bigger melty pockets. I use this method for these Chocolate Filled Cookies.
    • Added crunch: Fold ½ cup of pecans or walnuts. See also: Pecan Chocolate Chip Cookies.
    • Toppings: Dust with turbinado sugar or a cinnamon sugar sprinkle. I do the same in my Chocolate Chip Banana Bread.

    Step-By-Step Instructions

STEP 1: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees (F). Spray a 9x5 loaf pan with non-stick spray and set aside.

STEP 2: In a medium bowl add the dry ingredients. Whisk together until there are no lumps.

STEP 3: In a medium bowl combine the softened butter and pumpkin puree. Add the eggs and vanilla and mix until combined.

the wet and dry ingredients combined in a glass bowl on a grey background.

STEP 4: Mix the dry ingredients into the wet until just combined. Add the buttermilk and sour cream. Mix until just combined

STEP 5: Fold in the chocolate chips.

STEP 6: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and sprinkle the top with extra chocolate chips, if desired. Bake for 50-60 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs. If the pumpkin chocolate chip bread starts to get too brown you can cover it with foil for the remainder of the baking time.

STEP 7: Remove from oven and allow to cool before slicing.

    Expert Baking Tips

    • Don't over-mix the batter. Only mix until the ingredients are just combined.
    • Don't over-bake the pumpkin bread. When you remove it from the oven it will continue to bake from the residual heat.
    • Use an oven thermometer. Most ovens run either hot or cold.
    • Weigh your ingredients for accuracy, especially flour.

Flavor and Texture Science (Why This Stays Moist)

    • Pumpkin's water + pectin = tender crumb for days. Blot the puree if you see any watery separation or if you're using homemade pumpkin puree.
    • Leavening balance: Baking soda reacts with natural acidity (pumpkin and brown sugar) for a lifted crumb.
    • Spice strategy: pumpkin spice has a great blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, and allspice that brings that warm and cozy fall flavor.

    Troubleshooting (Cakey, Gummy, Sinking, Greasy)

    • Too cakey: too much flour or over baked. Weigh flour and check the bread early.
    • Gummy center or soggy bottom: under baked or too much moisture. Bake 5 more minutes at a time, place on the middle rack, and tent with foil if over browning.
    • Sinks in the middle: stale leavening, over mixing, or opening the oven early. Check expiration dates, mix gently, and keep oven door closed.
    • Greasy or dense: ratio off or the wet ingredients not fully combined. Check your measurements (I recommend weighing ingredients) and mix your wet ingredients until they are glossy and slightly thick.

    Make-Ahead, Storage, Freezing, and Reheating

    • Flavor bloom (24-48 hours): Spices meld and the crumb evens out on day two.
    • Prevent tacky tops: cool fully, lay a piece of parchment over the crust, wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Skip the fridge as it dries out the crumb.

    Room Temperature Storage (2-3 days)

    • Leave the loaf whole for best freshness. If pre-sliced, reassemble slices and wrap airtight or use a snug container.

    Freezing (6-8 weeks)

    • Whole loaf: wrap in parchment, then plastic, then foil.
    • Sliced: freeze slices on a sheet 30-60 min, stack with parchment squares, wrap in plastic, then bag.

    Reheating

    • Whole (thawed): 325 degrees (F), 10-15 min on a rack.
    • Slices (from frozen): 350 degrees (F), 5-8 min.
    • Avoid microwave: It can turn the crumb rubbery.

Pro Tip: Slice then freeze for the easiest lunchboxes and after-school snacks.

    Clean Slices and Serving

    • Serrated knife and brief chill for tidy slices. Wipe the knife between cuts. Warm slices lightly for serving.
    • Serve with: salted butter, cinnamon-honey, or your favorite espresso or latte.
    • Leftovers: French toast slices or a nostalgic PB&J.

    Mini Loaves and Gifting Guide

Packaging (no condensation) : cool fully, wrap in parchment paper, then with tight plastic, and finally add a decorative sleeve (twine or ribbon).

Make-ahead timeline for holidays: batch bake minis 4-8 weeks out (cool fully, wrap in parchment, plastic, then freezer bag). Day of gifting: thaw fully, sleeve, tag, and deliver mini pumpkin chocolate chip loaves!
