- There are only four simple ingredients, just enough to hold the cake together and make it delicious for your good boy or girl!
- You're avoiding harmful ingredients that might be in a store-bought dog cake.
- It will help celebrate your pup's special day. These Funfetti Cookie Sandwiches are a fun way for your to celebrate along side your dog.
- This recipe is so quick and easy to make. You can have it in the oven in less than 10 minutes. My Fudgy Brownies are just as quick if you're looking to satisfy your own sweet tooth!
- It is a small portion. Most puppy birthday cake recipes are for large cakes, this one is great for any size dog breed.
Ingredients
- The egg will hold the cake together and is a great source of nutrition for dogs.
- Peanut Butter will add flavor to the cake (what dog doesn't love peanut butter?) and provide healthy fat. Find a brand that does not contain xylitol, it is toxic to dogs. You can use the extra peanut butter to make these Peanut Butter Chocolate Lava Cakes!
- Apples also add flavor and are a good source of vitamins. Be sure to remove the core and seeds completely.
- If used in moderation, diluted, and baked, as it is in this recipe, baking powder is perfectly safe for dogs. It will help the cake to rise, but you are welcome to leave it out if you'd like.
See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.
Substitutions & Variations
- If you would rather not use apples, substitute them with pear. It is also safe for dogs to eat.
- You can substitute the peanut butter with almond or cashew butter.
- The baking powder can be left out if you don't want to use it, but the finished product will not rise as much and may be a little dense.
- You can bake the cake in a bone shaped or other design baking pan.
- If you're into cake decorating and want to add some frosting you can make homemade whipped cream with only heavy whipping cream and make this a Pinterest perfect dog birthday cake!

What has to rise? I don’t see any flour- just egg, apple and peanut butter.
Ellie Haley says
The whole cake rises with the addition of the baking powder.
Vh says
I love it but I definitely left out Baking soda because baking powder AND baking soda is really really harmful for dogs. So please be aware of that since this is for dogs.
It doesn’t need to rise, especially for the dogs, they are happy either way.
Ellie Haley says
It is totally optional, but also only dangerous when raw and in large quantities. It's diluted by the other ingredients and completely harmless in this recipe!

What size ramekin should be used for this recipe? 7oz or 14oz?

I adopted my rescue dog, Paws on leap day, 2/29/2020. She was five at the time, or so I was told. I was excited that she finally got a proper, official anniversary/b’day yesterday. I made your recipe as written. It turned out beautifully, but unfortunately I didn’t use enough of the non-stick pan spray, so it didn’t come out of the pan cleanly. I assure you that my dog didn’t mind in the slightest. Because she is a small dog, I divided it into four pieces and gave her 1/4 of it. She will get to enjoy it 3 more times. I wish I could enclose the video of her devouring it. She licked the bowl clean and then put one of her feet in the bowl, so she could anchor it in place, while she made sure she had gotten every last morsel. It was very cute to see. Thanks for the terrific recipe. I will make it again for her. I just have to figure out if she’ll get it on 2/28 or on 3/1 until the next leap year rolls around!

Could you used mashed bananas for the egg and it still turn out correctly?
Ellie Haley says
I have never tried this but I definitely think it would work! The egg is mostly just there to hold everything together and mashed bananas would have the same effect.

can you substitute baking powder and use flour?
Ellie Haley says
You could but it wouldn't have the same result. Flour is used as a binder, but the egg is already doing that in this recipe. Baking powder helps the cake to rise, which flour wouldn't do. You can just leave the baking powder out completely. It won't affect the taste, the cake will just be a bit dense
Crystal says
Can I use baking soda instead of baking powder?
Ellie Haley says
Technically, you can. I have never done this so I'm not sure how it will affect the final result.
