Our dogs, Chipper and Champ, are treated like family. I'm picky about what we feed them, so I made sure that all of the ingredients in this dog birthday cake recipe were dog-friendly. If you're here then I assume that you love your good boy or girl as much as I love mine and I am so happy to be able to help you spoil them with a fun little treat! Whether it's for the 1st birthday or the 15th your pup will love this cake!

You definitely need a human cake to celebrate alongside your dog cake! Check out my White Forest Cake, Peanut Butter Chocolate Lava Cakes, or Roasted Strawberry Shortcake!

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • There are only four simple ingredients, just enough to hold the cake together and make it delicious for your good boy or girl!
    • You're avoiding harmful ingredients that might be in a store-bought dog cake. This recipe for a doggie birthday cake skips all the preservatives and extra ingredeints!
    • It will help celebrate your pup's special day. These Funfetti Cookie Sandwiches are a fun way for your to celebrate along side your dog.
    • This recipe is so quick and easy to make. You can have it in the oven in less than 10 minutes. My Fudgy Brownies are just as quick if you're looking to satisfy your own sweet tooth!
    • It is a small portion. Most puppy birthday cake recipes are for large cakes, this one is great for any size dog breed.

    Ingredients

All of the ingredients for this puppy birthday cake recipe laid out in glass bowls on a grey background
    • The egg will hold the dog cake recipe together and is a great source of nutrition for dogs.
    • Peanut Butter will add flavor to the cake (what dog doesn't love peanut butter?) and provide healthy fat. Find a brand that does not contain xylitol, it is toxic to dogs. You can use the extra peanut butter to make these Peanut Butter Chocolate Lava Cakes!
    • Apples also add flavor and are a good source of vitamins. Be sure to remove the core and seeds completely.
    • If used in moderation, diluted, and baked, as it is in this recipe for dogs birthday cake, baking powder is perfectly safe for dogs. It will help the cake to rise, but you are welcome to leave it out if you'd like.

See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

    Substitutions & Variations

    • If you would rather not use apples, substitute them with pear. It is also safe for dogs to eat.
    • You can substitute the peanut butter with almond or cashew butter.
    • The baking powder can be left out if you don't want to use it, but the finished product will not rise as much and may be a little dense.
    • You can bake the cake in a bone shaped or other design baking pan.
    • If you're into cake decorating and want to add some frosting you can make homemade whipped cream with only heavy whipping cream and make this a Pinterest perfect dog birthday cake!
    • You can also use greek yogurt to ice the dog cakes. I'd just be sure to use plain and not flavored to avoid extra sugar.

This recipe has not been tested with other substitutions or variations. If you replace or add any ingredients, please let us know how it turned out in the comments below!

    Can dogs eat human cake?

No, they can't! Dog stomachs are different than humans and a lot of the foods we eat can hurt their stomachs. This dog birthday cake is made especially for your dog's sensitive stomach.

Can't I just buy a cake for my dog?

Definitely! There are plenty of dog bakeries that will sell what you are looking for, however, these can be expensive and have a lot of preservatives and undesirable ingredients. This recipe has minimal ingredients and expenses involved.

How do I store the dog cake?

Room Temperature: You can store this dog cake in an air-tight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

This might be a dumb question but does it matter what kind of apple you use or is there one you would recommend?
      Thanks!

Not a dumb question at all! You can use whatever kind you like or have on hand. I usually go for a red apple because they are less sour.

They were an absolute hit. I made one batch with apple and one with sweet potato and did them as muffins instead of in a ramekin. each batch made 3 muffins.

I split them each with my two dogs and they loved both so much they ate them up each time before any of their other food.

Thank you so much for this recipe it will easily be a standard for me for years to come. Do you happen to have any icing recipes? I would love a glaze and a whipped cream type depending on the situation.

This makes me so happy! I'm going to have to try them with sweet potatoes next time. I don't have a frosting recipe, but if I were going to make one I would do a homemade whipped cream (just plain whipped cream with no sugar or anything) or yogurt (I'd probably mix in some peanut butter).

Could I just blend the apples into sauce and add to the ingredients or would that be too mushy? Do you have a recipe having sweet potato as the main ingredient?

I think it would be too mushy if you blended the apple. I don't have a recipe with sweet potato as the main ingredient, but you could replace the apple with grated sweet potato and I think it would still work fine!

What size ramekin do you use? I have several different shapes and sizes and not sure what’s best. My fur child turns 15 tomorrow and I want to do something special.

I just finished baking the cake, do I wait for it to cool down in the room temperature and then feed my dog or should I put it in the refrigerator?

You can do either! Just as long as it is no longer hot when you feed it to your pup

This was fabulous, I made it last night for my dog's 10th birthday and he LOVED it! I mixed a little peanut butter with plain yogurt for icing, topped with some finely diced leftover chicken and garnished with a blueberry. I will definitely be making this again, thank you for the healthy, easy recipe 🙂

Has anyone tried making this in the microwave? I have a cute bone shaped microwaveable “pan” so I was thinking maybe I could use these ingredients in there and microwave it? Otherwise I would probably just use cupcake tin….
