In a large saucepan add the butter, corn syrup, brown sugar, and salt. Cook over medium-high heat until the butter is fully melted and the mixture comes to a boil.
While the mixture cooks, wash and peel the apples, then use a melon baller to make small balls of apple. You should be able to get about 10-12 balls out of each apple.
Insert the small wooden dowels or toothpicks into each apple ball and set aside.
Add the sweetened condensed milk and stir constantly until the mixture reaches 245 degrees (F).
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla.
Dip each apple ball into the caramel. You can then dip in additional toppings or leave plain.
